Hyoni Kang

Hyoni Kang (Kang Seung-Hyun) is a South Korean model who broke the mold when she became the first Asian model to win Ford’s Supermodel of the World title in 2008.

Career

Kang started her modeling career in 2008 when she walked for Phillip Lim, DKNY, Halston and Michael Kors, as well as in the Trovata and Naette Lepore shows. She has since walked for Badgley Mischka, Tory Burch, Roksanda Ilincic and House of Holland.

In addition to her runway work, Kang has also appeared on the covers of Korean Vogue, and in editorials in Teen Vogue and Marie Claire

In December 2009, Kang launched a vintage fashion brand called Reborn Process with her business partners, Yoon Ae-Ri, a stylist, and Lee Jun-Yeop, a photographer and film maker. Reborn Process started with upcycled vintage fashions, but now incorporates an entire clothing line. The original shop has since closed, but Kang and her partners are planning to reopen in a different location.

In May 2012, Kang started Hyoni TV, a six-episode web program in which Kang shares different New York neighborhoods. Kang spent long hours researching and planning for the show, and Hyoni TV was initially shot only in Korean. She added English subtitles after season 1 in order to appeal to a broader English-speaking audience.

Personal Outlook

Kang’s personal outlook is one of constant personal change and growth. She is quick to adapt to new situations, and doesn’t shy away from taking on several projects at once. She wants to be a “a simple, happy person who is remembered as someone who did fun and special things, and did those things differently.”
