David Gandy Bio

British male supermodel David Gandy was born February 19th 1980 in Billericay, Essex England. Gandy graduated from University of Gloucestershire in 2001 when he was twenty-one years old. When he first started out as a model he had a hard time because he was not like most of the other models who were skinny, androgynous guys who had feminine bodies. Instead, Gandy was a well built, muscular male, with a clearly defined sense of masculinity. In 2006 he was entered in a televised modeling competition by a friend that was hosted by Elite Models. Gandy ended taking first place in the televised modeling competition, and from then forward his career began to take off. Shortly after the competition, Gandy signed with the top modeling agency at the time which was Public Image Worldwide. He later signed a contract in late 2006 with Dolce & Gabbana’s to be the new male model figure for their fragrance Light Blue. Through this mounting success, he became what was the then the first male model to change the look of the industry with his muscular physique being a stark contrast from the usual thin androgynous look for males. It is look that has gained Gandy worldwide recognition and allowed many other male models to follow in his footsteps.

Gandy’s muscular look made him stand out and he is now heavily sought after for the runway. He has been working with and is a face of Dolce & Gabbana for several years now. His first show for them was in the summer of 2006 in Millan. In 2008 he renewed his contract with Dolce & Gabbana and was photographed by Mariano Vivanco for a calendar with them. He walked again in the show for Dolce & Gabbana’s show in Millan. You might have not known his name but Gandy’s body was well known for being on the runway for almost every Dolce & Gabbana show he could be a part of. Forbes had ranked him in 2009 the world’s third top male model, and in 2010 Dolce & Gabbana renewed their contract with him and for their Light Blue fragrance. In the middle of 2012 he did an ad watch campaign for the fall with Dolce & Gabbana. Not only has Gandy worked with Dolce & Gabbana but with many others as well, launching a widespread and lucrative modeling career for this British supermodel.

There are many campaigns that Gandy was a part of such as Zara’s spring ad campaign, Ermengildo Zenga fall ad campaing and Stefanel fall ad campaign with Gisele Bundchen. In May of 2007 he appeared on the cover of L’Optimum and appeared in Harper’s Bazaar editorial with Hana Soukupova. He was featured in 2008 about his life at home with his toy poodle in England. He had also signed another fragrance contract with Carolina Herrera’s Acqua. With so much recognition behind his name he has been able to start a few endeavors of his own, many of which have taken him beyong the world of fashion and modeling.

In recent years Gandy has moved beyond modeling to designing his own underwear and lounge-wear for Marks & Spencer—an enterprise he has been quite successful at. Along with this, Gandy has shown an interest in writing and journalism, going on to achieve some impressive accolades in this field as well. Recently, he has begun writing a blog for British Vogue, car reviews for British GQ, and lifestyle articles for Telegraph Men and has also started two new mobile apps. All of these things have taken much of Gandy’s time and have caused him to drift away from his modeling origins. He still models from time to time for Lucky Brand and of course Dolce & Gabbana, but lately he’s calmed down from the modeling world, choosing instead to focus on his other interests. Along with all of this, Gandy has also worked on many charity projects and fundraiser including the launching of his “Blue Steel Appeal”, charity foundation—a series of fashion events which aims to raise money for the charity, Comic Relief. While David Gandy may be quiet now in his modeling career, expect to still hear his name from time to time due to his ongoing involvement in organizations and disciplines such as those mentioned.
