Chanel Iman was born on December 1st, 1990. She is from Atlanta, Georgia but grew up in California. Chanel is an advocate for diversity on the runway and is most well known for being a Victoria’s Secret angel. She was signed by Ford Models and begun her modeling career at the age of 13.
In 2006 she came 3rd in Ford’s Supermodel of the World contest, which was held in New York. In February and July of 2007, Chanel appeared on the cover of ‘Teen Vogue’. She paraded for ‘Balenciaga’, ‘Max Mara’, ‘Versace’, ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ and ‘Stella McCartney’. She also appeared in advertising campaigns for ‘Bottega Veneta’, ‘GAP’, ‘Ralph Lauren’, ‘Express’ and ‘DNKY’. She appeared in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Chanel became a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2010.
Chanel is also no stranger to television appearances. In October 2007, she appeared alongside her mother on the Tyra Banks Show. Chanel was also a guest judge on the season premiere of America’s Next Top Model Season 13. She has also appeared in both a Beyonce and an Usher music video.
In 2010, Chanel opened her own clothing store in California. The store, which her mother helps to run, is called ‘The Red Bag’. She attended the Met Ball in 2012 with fashion designer Tom Ford. Chanel signed a contract with Skullcandy and has featured in their advertising campaigns. She was also the Sunglass Hut’s summer ambassador in 2012. Chanel also featured in Amazon Fashion’s 2012 holiday campaign.
Chanel is also passionate about activism. In 2011, she became one of only a handful of celebrities involved in USAID and Ad Council’s FWD campaign. The purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness to that year’s drought in East Africa. She appeared in television and Internet advertisements to “forward the facts” about the crisis. In May 2011, Chanel co-hosted the ‘Runway to Win’ fundraising event in Chicago. She designed a backpack in order to raise money for Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign. Chanel also attended a dinner with Obama at Sarah Jessica Parker’s house.
