Kiara Kabukuru

Kiara is famous for being America’s top model from the 90’s. And there is an imminent buzz about her making a comeback.

Kabukuru has worked for major fashion labels like Missoni’s, Victoria’s Secret, Christian Dior, and Givenchy. The advertising campaigns she worked in range from brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, Calvin Klien, Pirelli Calendar, L’ Oreal, Moschino, Emporio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana. The covers, that she has appeared in, are of Vogue Spain and America (she got an editorial for these too) and Black Issue. In America, people do not just recognize Kiara for her ethereal beauty, but because for a very long time, she was the face of Cover Girl, which is a cosmetic brand. Kiara’s favorite designers include Balmain, Jean Paul Gaulitier, Balenciaga, Ann Demeulmeester, Versace, and John Galliano. Her favorite memory regarding her career was when John Gilliano met her in a club in New York and asked her to open the show for Cruise Collection.

Biography

Kiara was born in Kampala, Uganda, at the time of civil unrest in the country. Her father lost his business and the entire family was put on a wanted dead list. Kiara and her siblings were smuggled into Kenya, after which they travelled to London and after that to California.

Kiara was discovered at the age of 16, by Bill Bodwell at a shopping mall, and that was only when she had been in America for a year. Her first plan was to stock up enough money for college; for this purpose, she took advice of an agent and went to Tom Ford, who was in London for a Gucci charity show, and performed as a model at that show. What happened was that at the end of the show, Tom Ford himself went up to her and booked the young talent exclusively for Gucci. And that was the starting point of how she got on Vogue America’s cover. Kabukaru lives in Gramercy Park, NY right now.

In 2000, Kiara Kabukuru was at the height of her career. She was signing high profile shows, was being booked for covers and doing runway shows for labels like Gucci and Cover Girl. She then met a devastating car accident that almost killed her. She was out cycling when an eight wheeler truck hit her, which hindered her plans for success. After the collision, the doctors found that the skin on her back was completely ripped away, she had some broken bones, and it was after not one, but several reconstructive surgeries on her face that she could finally do a show. But that was just the physical aspect. Kiara admitted that she was shell shocked for a lengthy while even after she stepped back into the fashion world in 2008. But in 2013, she made a comeback, as Kabukuru featured in the W magazine March 2013 cover and then moved on to make an appearance in the second issue of Carine Roitfield’s CR Book.
