Irina Laareanu is considered a Romanian Canadian. She was born in Cluj-Napoca, Romania but at age five she and her family immigrated to Canada. She spent her childhood in Montreal. At 13 she was able to move to London to study ballet, but broke her knee. It was at the age of 15 when she would meet Pete Doherty and later become engaged to him in 2007.
Irina’s modeling career started at 17 when she decided to attend an open call for Giovanni Modeling Agency. The call was made in Montreal. She went to the audition hoping she would be able to pay rent. Little did she know it would be the start of a long term career with tours to London and Paris with occasional stops in Barcelona, Madrid and Australia for the various fashion weeks.
In December/January 2005/2006, Kate Moss requested Irina to pose for Vogue Paris. She was then asked to do the cover of Vogue Italy for January 2006. The photographs were done by Steven Meisel. Irina holds the record for the most runaway walks in one single season due to her popularity in 2006.
She has modeled for Balenciaga, Chanel, McQueen, Lanvin, Anna Sui, Versace and several others. Kate Moss also selected her for the Topshop clothing range.
Besides modeling Irina has pursued music as a career. She recorded a folk album called Some Place Along the Way and has collaborated with Pete Doherty on Girl from the North Country.
