Grace Mahary Bio

Mahary Grace was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1989. She is currently a professional fashion model from Canada. Her parents hail from Eritrea. Mahary was scouted by Olsen Elmer in Toronto while out shopping with her mother. She won the 2005 Elle Canada Model Search and in 2009, she was featured in Trey Song’s in the famous “Invented Sex Music Video.” Here rise to the fashion spotlight came when Tisci Ricardo booked her to participate in the Givenchy F/W 12 fashion walk show as an exclusive. Since this first job, she has walked for nearly all the main brands in the fashion Arena. The most popular include Oscar de Renta, Givenchy, Ulyana Sergeenko, Corrado de Biase, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Maiyet, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Zac Posen, MaxMara, y-3, Edun, Cushnie, Honor, Isabel Marant, Balmain, Nina Ricci, Loewe, Ochs, Cushnie, Honor, Edun, Balenciaga, Marios Schwab, Mary Katrantzou, Philip Treacy, Theyskens’ Theory, Marc Jacobs, BCBG Max Azria, Herve Leger and Prada. Grace featured in editorials for V Magazine, Elle Canada, Vogue German, and the CR Fashion Book. She is presently signed with Elemer Olsen in Toronto, IMG Models in Paris and London, Why Not Models in Milan, and Ford Models in New York. During her early years, Grace Mahary was a die-hard basketball player and modeling never crossed her mind. Instead, she had her focus set on sporting until an opponent knocked off her teeth, forcing her to reassess her calling. But Mahary’s game loss was her modeling gain. She signed with Elmer Olsen Model Management - also responsible for Daria Werbowy. The then 22 years old Mahary flew to Paris, and it is when she was there that she met Tisci Riccardo, booked a Givenchy Exclusive for Fall of 2012, and the rest is history. However, if you review most sources on the web, they tend to provide that Grace Mahary made her show debut in 2014, gracing catwalks for nearly all fashion heavyweights for summer 2013 – from Prada and Marc Jacobs to Saint Laurent and Chanel, the latter of which she closed. In fact, the 22 years old also joined in on Slimane’s Hedi post-show celebrations, where she was given rounds of applause, with every glass raised to celebrate her debut for the label. In an interview with the Italian Vogue, Mahary says that when she was a child she used to play basketball with her two older brothers. She says that their parents moved to Canada in 1983. She says that in high school, she was the “mother” and all other children sought her advice. She says that given her basketball skills, tomboy is a vast understatement. She said, “If it were not for TLC and Destiny’s child, I would never have known girl power. Oh! And the Spice Girls too!” When asked how she was discovered, Mahary recounted that she was in Toronto in a mall with her family. She says, “They came up to me, and I said, “No, not a single possibility.” I don’t have a passion for anything more than basketball and academics.” “At that time,” she says, “I did not know what modeling was all about.” However, after just a couple of years of persistence from the team, she says she gave in and decided to travel all the way to Toronto and see what the talk was all entailed. Elmer Olsen took her on board. Mahary tells that her family, her mother, in particular, was ecstatic about it. She was like, “Why do you want to play basketball? Be a girl.” She tells that her father is all about academics, but he is starting to catch-up on how serious this business can be. You can make a profession of it. In an interview, Mahary was asked what she did in school, and she said, “I was taking physical education. Yes, pure jock, 100% opposite of what I am striving to achieve. I loved it. I still miss it. It’s something I’m interested in. If she decides to resume her studies, she has three more years to do, and Mahary is serious about it. When asked how her booking with Givenchy exclusive for fall 2012 came about, she said, “I was on my way to another casting and my agent in Paris said, “Mahary, drop everything and come to Givenchy.” Immediately, I booked Metro and hit the road all the way to Paris. “At first, I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere; because I was in the middle of suburbs of Paris, but just then my eyes landed on another model and I was like, “Okay, great. At least I am not alone. Ricardo was there sitting on his big couch listening to music, and I didn’t know whether I was only excited or nervous. So, I walked right to him, and he asked where I was from. Essentially, they made me walk for a second time and said I was in the right place at the appropriate time.”
