Daul Kim was a South Korean fashion model who was born on May 31, 1989 and tragically took her own life on November 19, 2009 in her apartment in Paris. She had brown eyes and black hair and needed to convince her strict parents that modelling was what she really wanted to do. Daul was also an accomplished painter and worked hard to bring awareness of the environment to the young people of South Korea while she was alive. She became the muse to Karl Lagerfeld and was known for her hair and style.
Her quirky personality and personal style made her loved by many and she once likened going to a basketball game like being at a dance rave party. Daul’s blog, I like to fork myself, was followed by millions who waited to hear what she had to say.
Daul has been described as a quiet and unassuming beauty who showed little evidence of a life that would be cut tragically short. Her writings, paintings and short films showed a fun and silly side with little material devoted to the darker side of life.
Daul started modelling in 2006 and appeared in several national magazines in editorials and on the front cover.
Her debut comes in 2007 at the fall fashion show in Paris where she walks for Dries van Noten, Chanel and Maison Martin Marigela and becomes a face for Moschino. Editorials featuring Daul appear in i-D, Chinese Vogue and Italian Amica magazines. She models for Nordstrom and Neiman & Marcus catalogues and wears clothes by designers including Chanel haute couture, Alexander McQueen and Salvatore Ferragamo. A short film, titled 4, was filmed by and starred Daul as an aeroplane passenger.
The beginning of 2008 sees Daul named as the model of the year by Anan magazine. She is then photographed by Dan Jackson for H&M and appears on the covers of Korean Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and is seen in editorials in several magazines including Korean Numero, i-D, Dazed and confused and V. Daul also appeared on hintmag.com, AnOther, 10 and Tank magazines and documents her experiences at NY Fashion week. Designers fashion includes Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Duro Olowu, Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui and Jean Paul Gaultier.
2009 is a busy year with Daul doing an impersonation of Linda Evangelista for Korean Vogue. Editorials appear in Velvet, Zoo, British Vogue and i-D. This year Daul leaves Elite Model management and signs with Next Model Management. She appears in a TV commercial for Christopher Kane and wears clothes by Karen Walker, Rodarte, Vivienne Westwood, D&G, Cavalli, Dries van Noten and Chanel. Daul also appeared in Dansk and RUSSH magazines.
After her death Daul was featured in 2 editions of Korean Vogue.
