Crystal Renn

Biography

Crystal was born in Miami, Florida on June 18th in 1986 and is a model and author. She first modelled at the age of 14 when she was told to lose weight if a career in modelling was what she wanted. Suffering from the dreadful disease of Anorexia nervosa she lost a huge amount of weight. After assessing her life and habits and putting on weight, she modelled as a plus size at a healthy weight for her height. It was after this weighty journey that she penned her book titled Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves that was published by Simon and Schuster in 2009. [1]

With dark hair and hazel eyes and 175cm tall, her fluctuating weight was talked about on TV shows and in many fashion magazines and blog spots. [3] She has been quoted as saying, “I‘ve always felt, in some ways, like an outsider. But that is the fashion industry.” [2] Appearing on many magazine covers, she has also posed nude and fashioned an eyewear collection by Zac Posen. Crystal is also known for her writing of articles for various magazines and even a movie based on an excerpt from her book Hungry.

In 2007, she married Greg Vrecenak but divorced in 2009. In 2010, she became the top paid plus size model in the USA and the most photographed size 14 model worldwide. [1]

After posing as a plus size model, Crystal lost some weight and went from a size 14 to a size 8 [4] and many of her followers thought she had chosen to lose weight to gain more notoriety as a thinner model. She said it “just happened and was not intentional” and she is campaigning for designers to make the sample size fashion for the catwalk a size 8 instead of a size 2 to encourage the models to eat healthier and not be as obsessed about their weight. [4]

Crystal loves looking through flea and vintage markets and taking photographs when on modelling jobs. She also plays the piano, makes jewellery and candles and does yoga to keep herself grounded. [7]

Career

In 2003 crystal first signs with the Ford modelling agency and then appears in editorials for issues of Italian Vogue and Vanity Fair in 2004.

Writing about her experiences as a model comes easy for Crystal and she has penned articles for Glamour since 2004 with a series of articles in 2010 where she covered the New York Fashion Week and her life being back on the runway. [5]

2005 sees her photographed twice for French Vogue by Craig McDean and Patrick Demarchelier. In October of the same year, she shows fashions by John Paul Gaultier in Paris and appears on The Tyra Banks Show talking about the darker side of modelling and weight issues. [2] At the end of the year she is seen on The View and in catalogues for Sax Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom and again in 2007.

In 2006, she is photographed for a Dolce and Gabbana by Steven Meisel and appears nude in German Vogue and again for a Breast Cancer Research Foundation ad in 2007. She is on the cover of French Revue de Modes and Russian Harpers Bazaar. [2]

Towards the end of 2007 she closes the Elena Miro spring show in Japan and does an editorial for Elle magazine. [2]

2010 is a very busy year with editorials in V magazine and 6 in French Vogue. This year she is the face of John Paul Gaultier and models fashions by Chanel and Zac Posen in both autumn and spring fashion shows in New York and Paris. [2]

Jimmy Choo chooses Crystal to be the face of his brand in 2011 in another busy year appearing in various language editions of Vogue, in W magazine and another. [2] The MR Denim campaign is another highlight [6] with a plus size jeans shoot.

More editorials follow in 2012 for various editions of Vogue and Vogue Hommes and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit campaign. [1]

In 2013, she made an appearance on Entertainment Tonight, Stylist magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, W, editions of Vogue, Allure, Tank and signs an advertising contract with fragrance giant Reem Acra.
